How to Allow Remote Service Management through the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security using Group Policy

If remote service management is not allowed through the Windows Firewall any operations the connect the Windows Services Manager may fail or take a long time to connect.

Prerequisites

You will require the Group Policy Management Tools on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019.

Instructions

To Allow inbound Remote Service Management please follow these instructions.



  1. Edit an existing Group Policy object or create a new one using the Group Policy Management Tool.
  2. Navigate to “Computer Configuration/Policies/Windows Settings/ Security Settings/ Windows Defender firewall with Advanced security”.
  3. Right click “Inbound Rules” and select “New rule…”Allow inbound Remote Service Management - Step 1
  4. Check “Predefined” and select “Remote Service Management” from the drop-down list.Allow inbound Remote Service Management - Step 2
  5. Click “Next”.
  6. Check rules in the “Domain” profile and uncheck other rules.Allow inbound Remote Service Management - Step 3
