MetaLAN 2.5 Beta

 

The very first beta of MetaLAN 2.5 is now available. Currently this is just a first step toward a release version but we are very keen to hear what you think, what you like and what you don't.

Why use a beta version

First and foremost this is your best chance to influence the development of MetaLAN. If you want things a certain way tell us now, once the new user interface has been released it will be much harder to change. We will make every effort to make the beta version usable in a production environment. Although, this is an early beta every effort will be made on our behalf to ensure that data will not be lost between beta versions and between beta and release versions. That being said it is not called a beta version without reason. A beta version will not usually be as stable and mature as a release version.

Administrator

MetaLAN Administrator 2.5+ will require 2.5+ version of MetaLAN Server. Because of extended functionality it uses a new version of the server database and will not work with prior versions of MetaLAN Server. MetaLAN License Manager functionality has been incorporated into the MetaLAN Administrator interface. The Beta version interface is in a state of flux and we are open and interested in any suggestions regarding the design of the user interface. Not all functions available in the older version will be immediately available in the new version, this is because we want to review each module before we introduce it into the new interface. Currently, Stand-Alone mode is not available in the beta of Administrator, so MetaLAN Server must be installed to use it.

Server

The major change with MetaLAN Server is the introduction of a new database format, we have moved to a MS Jet database format. We plan to introduce support for MS SQL Server database as an option in a future release. MetaLAN Server also maintains an up-to-date version of the legacy database allowing support for older versions of MetaLAN Administrator. You cannot run more than one version of MetaLAN Server on an installation of Windows, you will need to run the beta version on a different computer to your production version of MetaLAN Server.

Licence Manager

MetaLAN License Manager functionality has been incorporated into MetaLAN Administrator 2.5. The License Manager database has also been incorporated into the new MetaLAN Server database, so software license information is now available to all MetaLAN users. A License Manager Database Import Tool is available to import your current License Manager Database(s) into the new MetaLAN Server Database.

Enhancements

• New user interface for MetaLAN Administrator.
• License Manager has become a part of MetaLAN Administrator and has added functionality.
• MetaLAN Administrator has configurable look and feel (Skins)

Limitations

• MetaLAN Administrator 2.5 and Server will start at version 2.5 to reduce confusion about compatibility.
• MetaLAN Administrator 2.5 requires MetaLAN Server Version 2.5 or greater (Also in Beta).
• If you own a MetaLAN license you will need to re-run the activation program to activate this version.
• Changing settings in the beta version of MetaLAN may affect settings in older versions.
• This version does not support "Stand Alone Mode". This feature is will be added in future.
