After investigation is appears that on Windows XP SP3 and possibly earlier versions of Windows.  The WMI provider often returns garbage when reading a string registry value that contains no data.

It is posible to create string registry values that contain no data at all.  This is different to a zero length string.  In Windows XP the WMI Registry provider returns garbage due to what appears to be a buffer overflow.  The provider often fails completely.

This issue cannot be fixed by Hammer Software so code to detect and ignore this garbage is introduced into MetaLAN Server version 2.0.4.51
